The UK kit to buy off the back of this
Germany's winners map cleanly onto what is sold in the UK. If you take one thing from this page, these are the picks, all EcoFlow STREAM.
Panels and a microinverter, no battery, inside the 800W cap. These are the formats built for the new rules, which come into force on 27 August 2026 under SI 2026 No. 848. No product has been approved and listed on the ENA G98 register yet, so treat this as the category to get ready for rather than something you can lawfully plug in today.
EcoFlow STREAM 800 Balcony Kit
Two 400W panels and an 800W microinverter, no battery. The cheapest compliant way onto a balcony.
Latest price at EcoFlow →also on Amazon UKAnything with a battery sits outside the plug-in route, because the legal definition excludes devices designed to import electricity in order to store it for later. These are still a good buy and still legal, they simply need a qualified electrician for a fixed install, or they work as portable units with no wiring at all.
EcoFlow STREAM Pro 1.92 kWh
Kit with battery built in: 800W in, 1200W AC out, stack to 11.52 kWh, smart time-of-use.

Why Germany leads Europe in balcony solar
Four things made Germany the undisputed balcony solar capital of Europe:
- High electricity prices. German households pay roughly €0.35–0.40 per kWh, well above the UK price cap. That turned balcony solar from a nice idea into a serious bill-reduction tool.
- Apartment-heavy living. Around 56% of Germans rent, and most live in flats. Balcony solar is the only realistic option for renters, which is exactly the gap we have in UK cities.
- Friendly regulation. The Solarpaket I (May 2024) lifted the legal plug-in limit to 800W, allowed the standard Schuko plug, and simplified registration. No certified electrician required for a basic install.
- A competitive supplier market. Brands like Anker, Zendure, EcoFlow, Growatt, Hoymiles and Priwatt have been fighting for share since 2022, pushing prices down and features up.
Solar generation as a share of Germany's electricity grid through a typical clear summer day. The midday peak is what 1 million Steckersolar systems plus rooftop and utility solar add up to.
Plug-in solar devices listed in Germany's official Marktstammdatenregister (MaStR). Registered stock roughly tripled in two years. The real installed base is higher, because many devices go unregistered.
The law that unlocked it: Germany's balcony solar timeline
Germany's boom did not follow one change, but a sequence of federal measures that stripped out cost, paperwork and the landlord veto. The single biggest unlock for renters and flat owners was a change to the German Civil Code.
- January 2023: zero VAT on residential photovoltaics, including balcony systems.
- 16 May 2024 (Solarpaket I): the feed-in limit rose from 600W to 800W and registration was cut to a single step in the Marktstammdatenregister.
- 17 October 2024: tenants and flat owners gained a legal right to install plug-in solar. It was added to the German Civil Code as a privileged measure, so landlords and owners' associations can no longer simply refuse a reasonable request.
- December 2025: Germany published the world's first dedicated product standard for plug-in solar (DIN/VDE).
What this means for the UK, right now
The UK is walking the same path, a few years behind. The Renters' Rights Act 2025 removed the landlord-veto blocker, and in June 2026 the Government opened its plug-in solar consultation, the step that sets the legal product route here. Germany's data is the clearest preview we have of what UK demand could look like once a certified kit exists: a market that tripled in two years, dominated by the exact microinverter-and-battery designs now sold in the UK. If you are weighing it up, our renter's guide covers your rights and the UK-ready kits hub lists the EcoFlow STREAM range with current pricing.

What sold best in Germany, 2023–2026
I've tracked German review sites, Amazon.de bestseller lists, and the Marktstammdatenregister (Germany's official energy register) to pull out the clear trends. Five brands dominated the balcony space in that window:
| Brand / series | Best year | What made it popular |
|---|---|---|
| Anker SOLIX Solarbank | 2024–2025 | Compact battery, 800W output, mature app |
| Zendure SolarFlow | 2023–2024 | First big modular battery story; expandable |
| EcoFlow STREAM | 2025–2026 | Newer, 6,000-cycle LFP, AI-based TOU control |
| Growatt NEO series | 2023–2025 | Simple Hoymiles-style inverter, low price |
| Priwatt / Yuma kits | 2022–2024 | Turnkey bundles with full mounting hardware |
Only some of these are available to UK buyers on Amazon UK today, the EcoFlow STREAM range is the most complete option for UK shoppers right now, which is why it's what I've been testing and reviewing.
The winning traits: what every bestseller had in common
Five features showed up again and again at the top of the German bestseller lists. If a kit has most of these, it's a good UK candidate too.
1. Microinverters, not string inverters
Every popular kit uses a microinverter, Hoymiles, APSystems or EcoFlow's own. Microinverters handle shading better, simplify wiring and meet G98 / DIN VDE requirements out of the box.
2. Modular battery storage
The shift between 2023 and 2025 was obvious: kits that let you add a battery later outsold panel-only kits roughly 2:1 by 2024. Buyers wanted an upgrade path without throwing away the starter kit.
3. App control with time-of-use logic
German buyers got sophisticated. They wanted apps that could hold battery energy for evening peak, sell at high-tariff hours, or prioritise EV charging. EcoFlow and Anker built this into their flagship kits.
4. Plug-and-play install
If a kit required a certified electrician, it didn't sell. The legal Schuko-plug path in Germany meant renters and tenants could install themselves in an afternoon. The UK equivalent is a G98-notified install on a 13A plug, see my G98 guide for the UK paperwork.
5. Modularity and 400W+ bifacial panels
Early kits shipped 300W mono panels. By 2025, bifacial 400–440W panels were standard, same footprint, 30% more output. Any kit you buy now should be 400W panels or better.
Top 5 kits that matter (and what's available in the UK)
Here are the five models that define the German market in 2026, ranked by relevance to UK buyers. Only the EcoFlow STREAM line is currently on Amazon UK at scale, the others are either Germany-only or via specialist importers.
| # | Kit | Why it dominates | UK availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | EcoFlow STREAM series | Newest platform, best battery tech, full UK launch | Amazon UK · in stock |
| 2 | Anker SOLIX Solarbank 2 | Market leader 2024; app maturity | Import only |
| 3 | Zendure SolarFlow AIO | Popular modular battery | Limited UK |
| 4 | Growatt NEO 800M-X | Budget Hoymiles-style kit | Specialist importers |
| 5 | Priwatt duoPremium | Turnkey bundle with brackets | Not UK available |
What UK buyers can learn right now
Three practical lessons from Germany that apply to UK renters and homeowners today:
- Buy microinverter kits, not string. Microinverter kits are what survived the German shakeout. They work better in real balconies with part-shade.
- Pick a kit with a battery path. Even if you don't want a battery today, pick a kit that lets you add one later. German buyers who locked into panel-only kits in 2023 mostly regretted it by 2025.
- Match the kit to the legal limit. Germany's 800W legal limit is nearly identical to the UK's G98 notification threshold of ~16A per phase. An 800W setup is the sweet spot for both markets.

Frequently asked questions
-
Electrically they can work, but German kits ship with Schuko plugs (Europlug) and are certified to VDE standards. A UK install needs to be carried out by a CPS-registered electrician with a hardwired connection to your consumer unit (BS 1363 and BS 7671 do not authorise plugging small generators into a 13A wall socket), and G98 notification to your DNO. It is simpler to buy a kit already sold on Amazon UK.
-
Slowly. The Renters' Rights Act 2025 removed the biggest blocker (landlord refusal), and G98 notification is now well-understood. We're maybe 3 years behind where Germany was in 2024. Expect rapid growth in 2026–2027.
-
Modular battery upgrade path. UK daytime exports go straight back to the grid unless you store them, and we don't have a universal SEG buyback rate. A battery lets you use your own daytime energy at evening peak. Buy a kit that allows this even if you skip the battery initially.
-
I like both brands. They just aren't consistently stocked on Amazon UK at competitive prices yet. When they are, I'll cover them. Right now, an EcoFlow STREAM bought on Amazon UK comes with UK returns, UK VAT and UK consumer protection. That's a big deal for a £500–£2000 purchase.
